Over 20 Years of Experience. Meticulous Work. Results You Can See.

When it comes to restoring tile and grout, experience matters.

For more than 20 years, Matt Ahrend, owner of The Grout Doctor® of Salt Lake City (South & Westside), has helped homeowners restore bathrooms, showers, floors, backsplashes, countertops, and other tiled surfaces throughout the area.

Matt is known for being meticulous about his work. He pays attention to the small details that can make a big difference in the finished result, and he approaches every project with the mindset of doing the job right—not simply getting the job done.

If stained grout, cracked grout, failing caulk, damaged tile, or years of buildup are making your home look older than it should, replacement may not be necessary. In many cases, professional restoration can dramatically improve the appearance of existing tile and grout while saving the expense and disruption of a full remodel.

Before you replace it, let The Grout Doctor® take a look at it.

Meet Your Local Grout Doctor – Matt Ahrend

There is a difference between hiring someone who cleans grout and hiring someone who has spent more than two decades learning how to restore it.

Matt has operated The Grout Doctor® of Salt Lake City (South & Westside) for over 20 years. During that time, he has worked on countless tile, grout, shower, bathroom, kitchen, and flooring projects and has developed the experience to recognize what can be restored, what needs to be repaired, and what may actually need replacement.

He is also a serious perfectionist.

Matt takes pride in clean lines, careful repairs, consistent grout color, properly finished caulking, and the details that determine whether a restoration simply looks better, or looks professionally finished.

For homeowners, that means you are working with a local owner who has spent decades developing his craft and who takes personal pride in the finished result.

Professional Tile & Grout Restoration Services

The Grout Doctor® provides much more than grout cleaning. Our goal is to restore tiled surfaces whenever practical, addressing both appearance and problem areas that can develop as grout, caulk, and tile age.

Grout Cleaning & Tile Cleaning

Before and after kitchen tile floor with dark grout lines refreshed to a light, uniform finish.
Kitchen floor transformation: Dark, uneven grout lines are refreshed to create a cleaner, brighter, more uniform appearance.

Even with regular household cleaning, grout can gradually become dark, stained, and discolored as dirt and residue settle into its porous surface.

Professional tile and grout cleaning removes stubborn buildup that ordinary mopping and household cleaners may leave behind. A professional cleaning can make a significant difference in bathrooms, showers, kitchen floors, entryways, and other tiled areas.

Grout Recoloring & Color Sealing

Before and after close-up of floor tile grout changing from dark and stained to light and even.
A closer look at grout color restoration: Previously dark grout lines now have a lighter, more consistent finish.

Sometimes grout is structurally sound but permanently stained or uneven in color.

Grout recoloring can provide a more uniform, refreshed appearance without removing and replacing all of the existing grout. It can be an excellent option for homeowners who want their tile installation to look cleaner, newer, and more consistent.

Color sealing also helps protect grout against future staining and makes routine maintenance easier.

Grout Repair & Replacement

Before and after kitchen countertop grout restoration beside a stainless-steel sink.
Countertop grout renewal: Stained grout around stone-look tiles and the sink edge is restored to a crisp, consistent appearance.

Cracked, missing, loose, or deteriorating grout shouldn’t simply be ignored.

Matt can evaluate problem areas and determine the appropriate repair. Depending on the condition of the surface, this may involve repairing isolated areas, replacing deteriorated grout, or regrouting sections where necessary.

With more than 20 years of experience, Matt understands that good grout repair is about more than filling a crack—the repair needs to be carefully completed so the finished area looks clean and professional.

Shower & Bathroom Restoration

Before and after tiled shower restoration with brighter grout and cleaner shower surfaces.
Shower restoration: Tile and grout surfaces look brighter and cleaner, with visibly improved grout lines across the shower floor and walls.

Showers are among the hardest-working tiled surfaces in a home.

Constant exposure to water, soap, minerals, and humidity can lead to stained grout, deteriorated caulk, mildew buildup, cracked grout, and an overall worn appearance.

The Grout Doctor® can address multiple issues as part of a shower restoration, including:

  • Tile and grout cleaning
  • Grout repair
  • Grout recoloring
  • Regrouting where needed
  • Removal and replacement of deteriorated caulk
  • Tile repair or replacement
  • Grout sealing

Instead of assuming an older shower needs to be torn out, let Matt evaluate what can be restored first.

Caulking & Recaulking

Before and after pink tile bathtub surround with stained joints restored to clean, neat lines.
Bathtub surround refresh: Deteriorated, discolored joints are replaced by clean-looking lines around the tub and fixtures.

Old caulk can crack, separate, discolor, or develop mildew, especially around tubs, showers, corners, and changes of plane.

Removing deteriorated caulk and replacing it with a clean, properly finished application can make a noticeable difference in both the appearance and maintenance of a bathroom.

And when you’re a perfectionist, details like caulk lines matter.

Loose, Cracked & Damaged Tile Repair

A damaged tile doesn’t always mean replacing an entire floor, wall, or shower.

When possible, Matt can repair loose or unstable tile and replace individual cracked or damaged tiles, helping preserve the surrounding installation and avoid unnecessary remodeling.

Natural Stone Cleaning & Sealing

Natural stone requires different care than standard ceramic or porcelain tile.

The Grout Doctor® of Salt Lake City (South & Westside) provides professional cleaning and sealing for natural stone surfaces including:

Granite • Travertine • Marble • Sandstone • Slate • Limestone • Terrazzo

Proper care can help revive the appearance of natural stone while protecting the surface from staining and everyday wear.

EnduroShield® Protective Coating

The Grout Doctor® of Salt Lake City (South & Westside) also offers certified application of EnduroShield®, a protective coating available for appropriate tile and grout, glass and stainless-steel surfaces.

Ask us whether EnduroShield® is appropriate for the surface you would like to protect.

Restore Before You Replace

Don’t Replace Your Tile Until You Know What Can Be Restored

An outdated-looking bathroom doesn’t necessarily need a remodel.

A dingy shower doesn’t necessarily need to be torn out.

And stained grout doesn’t necessarily need to be replaced.

With the right combination of professional cleaning, repairs, recoloring, sealing, and caulking, existing tiled surfaces can often be given a dramatically refreshed appearance.

Let someone with more than 20 years of experience take a look before you decide what to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can old or badly stained grout really be restored?

Often, yes. Depending on its condition, grout may benefit from professional cleaning, repair, recoloring, or sealing. Matt can evaluate the surface and recommend the appropriate approach.

Do I have to replace my tile if the grout looks bad?

Not necessarily. Tile can remain in good condition long after grout becomes stained or deteriorated. Restoring the grout can sometimes dramatically change the appearance of the entire surface.

Can you repair just part of my grout?

In many cases, yes. Matt can inspect cracked, loose, missing, or deteriorated grout and determine whether localized repair or more extensive regrouting is appropriate.

Can you make discolored grout look consistent again?

Grout recoloring or color sealing can often create a much more uniform appearance when existing grout has become permanently stained or uneven.

Do you work on showers?

Yes. Shower restoration is an important part of our work and may include cleaning, grout repair, regrouting, grout recoloring, caulking, sealing, and tile repair.

Do you clean and seal natural stone?

Yes. We work with a variety of natural stone surfaces, including granite, travertine, marble, sandstone, slate, limestone, and terrazzo.

How much does tile and grout restoration cost?

Every project is different based on the size, condition, materials, and services required. That’s why we offer a free estimate so Matt can evaluate the project and explain your options.
